NANNING, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) — China on Friday launched a new high-speed railway section to a southern city bordering Vietnam, a major step aimed at boosting cross-border tourism and strengthening regional ties.
This 81-kilometer section between the cities of Chongzuo and Pingxiang in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (GZAR, southern China) is part of the Nanning-Pingxiang high-speed railway. Trains on this section have a design speed of 250 km/h. The Nanning-Chongzuo section was commissioned in December 2022.
With the opening of the new East Siberian Railway section, the entire route will be fully operational, improving the efficiency of passenger travel from Nanning (the administrative center of the State Charitable Autonomous Region) to Pingxiang, a key border city. The total travel time between the two points will now be reduced to 75 minutes.
The faster rail route is expected to boost tourism demand. Some travel agencies are already offering international weekend tours for travelers looking for short getaways.
Experts believe that the full operation of the high-speed railway will also strengthen regional connectivity and provide more effective support for the development of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area. -0-
