BEIJING, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) — Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson Jiang Bin on Friday called on Japan to fulfill its obligations as a defeated country in World War II, stop challenging the post-war world order and sabotage peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region.

Jiang Bin thus commented at a press conference on the news that the Japanese government had recently given the go-ahead for additional defense spending and was also holding talks with the Philippines about exporting a Japanese missile.

A Defense Ministry spokesman noted that in recent years, Japan has repeatedly violated the country's pacifist constitution, significantly increased its defense budget, attempted to export lethal weapons, and revised its three non-nuclear principles.

"This has accelerated the pace of easing restrictions on military development and creates a sense that militaristic Japan is returning," he said.

Jiang Bin also criticized Japan for its lack of active efforts and serious delays in disposing of the chemical weapons it left behind on Chinese territory.

According to him, during the years of aggressive war against China, militaristic Japan, in flagrant violation of international law, used chemical weapons in large quantities, resulting in the injury of more than 200,000 Chinese military personnel and civilians.

After the defeat, in order to cover up their crimes, the Japanese side left a large quantity of chemical weapons in China, resulting in more than 2,000 more casualties, Jiang Bin noted, adding that these chemical weapons continue to threaten the personal and property safety of the Chinese people and cause serious damage to the environment.

The Chinese side calls on Japan to make every effort to speed up the disposal process, promptly collect and transmit to the Chinese side information on the abandoned chemical weapons, provide all possible assistance to the Chinese side in the search and identification, and also properly assume responsibility for the cleanup of contaminated water and soil, he concluded. -0-
