Phnom Penh, December 5 (Xinhua) — Cambodia views digital technology as a means of rapid modernization, development, and increased added value in the economy and society. This was stated by Permanent Deputy Prime Minister and Cabinet Minister Vongsay Vissoth on Friday, speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2025 Digital Government Forum.
According to him, digital technologies, especially artificial intelligence (AI), have developed rapidly in recent years and permeated all layers of the economy and public life. "This has led to increased efficiency, quality, and productivity in various sectors, as well as significant changes in how we live, work, trade, and communicate with each other," the Deputy Prime Minister said.
Technology brings both opportunities and risks, and digitalization has become a defining factor in determining the competitive advantages and even the destinies of nations, institutions, businesses, and individuals, said V. Vissot.
"For Cambodia and developing countries in general, on the one hand, technology can be seen as a means of rapid modernization, development, and increased added value in the economy and society, particularly for improving citizens' living standards," he noted. "On the other hand, if technology adoption is untimely, misdirected, uncompetitive, or fails to meet current needs, the development gap will continue to widen both between countries and between peoples," the Deputy Prime Minister added.
The Cambodian government has focused on increasing investment and refocusing priority activities to accelerate and effectively build a digital ecosystem, as well as address new challenges posed by the rapid development of digital technologies, especially AI, and their use for nefarious purposes such as cybercrime and online fraud.
