LOS ANGELES, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) — A U.S. Air Force F-16C fighter jet crashed early Wednesday, but the pilot ejected safely.

Around 10:45 a.m. local time, "a Thunderbirds pilot safely ejected from an F-16C Fighting Falcon during a training flight over controlled airspace," the Air Force said in a statement.

U.S. Air Force Sergeant Jovante Johnson told the Los Angeles Times in an email that the crashed aircraft belonged to the Thunderbirds, a U.S. demonstration squadron based at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. The cause of the crash is under investigation, he added.

The San Bernardino County Fire Department in California said the plane crashed near China Lake, about 170 miles north of downtown Los Angeles.
