CARACAS, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) — Colombia's Foreign Ministry on Tuesday expressed deep concern over U.S. President Donald Trump's recent remarks about possible military action against Colombia under the pretext of fighting drug trafficking.
In its statement, the department reiterated Colombia's strong rejection of any external threats of aggression that undermine the dignity, territorial integrity and national sovereignty of the Colombian people.
The statement said Colombia remains committed to combating drug trafficking in a comprehensive, balanced, multidisciplinary and evidence-based manner, while respecting human rights and fundamental freedoms, in accordance with the principle of shared responsibility.
The statement also calls for unity and solidarity among Latin American and Caribbean countries so that the region can unite against any external intervention aimed at undermining sovereignty.
Earlier on Tuesday, Trump told reporters at the White House that any country smuggling drugs into the United States could be attacked, after raising concerns about cocaine from Colombia.
Since early September, the US has carried out at least 21 strikes on suspected narco-ships in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific, including Colombian vessels, killing more than 83 people. –0–
