St. Petersburg, December 3 (Xinhua) — Engineers from the St. Petersburg State Marine Technical University (SPbSMTU) have developed a unique drone assistant for diver support. This was reported on Wednesday by TASS, citing the university's press service.
The drone is an autonomous underwater robot with two engines, equipped with an electronic navigation module, radio communication antennas, a hydroacoustic system, a battery pack, controllers, sensors, and a lighting system for illumination both above and below the water.
Testing of a prototype autonomous underwater drone was successful. The device is designed to improve the safety of diving operations, providing continuous underwater positioning, maintaining communication, and serving as a visual reference in challenging conditions.
SPbGMTU notes that commercial surface platforms, hydroacoustic beacons, and communication buoys exist, but only the solution they developed combines navigation, communication, tracking, and autonomous diver tracking. The device operates autonomously, without tethers or cables, without interfering with underwater operations.
