TOKYO, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) — Leaders of several Japanese opposition parties sharply criticized Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi for her recent erroneous remarks about Taiwan and called on her to withdraw those statements to prevent further damage to Japan-China relations.
On state broadcaster NHK on Sunday, Satoshi Honjo, head of the political department of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, said Sanae Takaichi's remarks demonstrated a lack of understanding of what constitutes a "survival-threatening situation" under Japanese law.
He noted that her statements were at significant odds with the relevant legislation, with how the Taiwan issue is handled in Japan-China relations, and with the consistent position expressed by successive Japanese governments since the normalization of diplomatic relations with China in 1972.
On the same program, Taku Yamazoe, head of the political department of the Japanese Communist Party, called Sanae Takaichi's statements "extremely dangerous" and warned that they contradict the country's Constitution and could lead to "serious consequences" for Japan.
He emphasized that Japan, in the 1972 China-Japan Joint Communique, stated its "full understanding and respect" for China's position that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory. He said Sanae Takaichi's statements clearly contradict this position, as well as the 2008 China-Japan Joint Statement, which asserted that the countries "pose no threat to each other."
To resolve the current diplomatic tension, the prime minister "must withdraw her statements," Taku Yamazoe said.
Akiko Oishi, a co-representative of the Reiwa Shinsengumi party, also criticized Sanae Takaichi's comments as "groundless," calling on the Japanese public to "remain calm and not succumb to provocations." –0–
