Bogota, November 30 (Xinhua) — Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Sunday condemned U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement to close Venezuelan airspace, calling on countries to uphold international order.
"No airline should accept illegal orders regarding any country's airspace," G. Petro said on social media, calling on D. Trump to "return to respect for international law and order."
He called on Latin American countries to demand respect for regional sovereignty and resume normal air travel, emphasizing that only Venezuelans have the right to choose their government. The Colombian Foreign Ministry stated that the US actions are creating "unnecessary tensions" that undermine stability in Latin America. "Uncoordinated actions over the airspace of a sovereign state contradict the spirit of cooperation, goodwill, and mutual respect that should define relations between states in the region," the statement read.
D. Trump said Saturday that the airspace over and around Venezuela should be considered "completely" closed. –0–
