Moscow, December 1 (Xinhua) — Moscow considers the recent statement by NATO Military Committee Chairman Giuseppe Cavo Dragone about the possibility of preemptive strikes against Russia as a defensive measure to be extremely irresponsible and an attempt to undermine efforts to resolve the Ukrainian conflict. This was stated in a statement by Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, published on the Russian Foreign Ministry's website on Monday.
"We view G. Cavo Dragone's statement about possible preemptive strikes against Russia as an extremely irresponsible step, indicating the alliance's readiness to continue escalating. We see it as a deliberate attempt to undermine efforts to resolve the Ukrainian crisis," the statement reads.
M. Zakharova warned that people making such statements must be aware of “the resulting risks and possible consequences, including for the alliance members themselves.”
She added that NATO has long been open about its true goals and intentions. "Meanwhile, the bloc's leadership has the decency to accuse Russia of 'belligerent nuclear rhetoric,' intimidation, and the notorious hybrid attacks, without any evidence of our involvement," the Russian diplomat stated.
The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized that “against the backdrop of the anti-Russian hysteria being whipped up by the alliance, and the fear-mongering about Russia’s ‘imminent attack’ on the bloc’s member countries, such statements not only add fuel to the fire, but seriously inflame the already existing confrontation.”
