St. Petersburg, December 1 (Xinhua) — Russia's first successful heart transplant on an HIV-infected patient was performed in St. Petersburg, Tatyana Vinogradova, chief physician of the AIDS and Infectious Diseases Center, announced on Monday.

At a press conference dedicated to World AIDS Day, she noted that two months ago, the country's first heart transplant was performed on an HIV-infected patient. The patient is currently in the hospital ward, and the operation has been quite successful.

According to T. Vinogradova, HIV patients have every right to receive care at any medical facility, and antiretroviral therapy can improve their quality and length of life.

As reported on the Telegram channel of the St. Petersburg AIDS and Infectious Diseases Center, the patient underwent artificial left ventricle placement 1.5 years ago and required a heart transplant due to worsening heart failure. The surgery took place at the Almazov National Medical Research Center and lasted over 12 hours. The transplant procedure was standard and ended successfully.

World AIDS Day is celebrated on December 1. It was established by the World Health Organization in 1988. –0–
