CARACAS, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) — The Venezuelan government on Saturday condemned the threat posed by the United States against the sovereignty of the South American country's airspace, calling it "another extravagant, illegal and unjustified aggression against the Venezuelan people."
In an official statement, Caracas rejected Washington's attempt to apply extraterritorial jurisdiction to Venezuela, noting that US actions threaten Venezuela's national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Amid rising tensions between the two countries, US President Donald Trump said earlier on Saturday that the airspace over and around Venezuela should be considered "completely" closed.
“To all airlines, pilots, drug dealers, and human traffickers, please be advised that the airspace over and around Venezuela should be considered completely closed,” Trump wrote in a post on the social network Truth Social, without further explanation.
The US actions amount to a clear threat of force, which is prohibited by the UN Charter, the Venezuelan government said in a statement.
According to the 1944 Chicago Convention, each state exercises exclusive sovereignty over the airspace above its territory, the government of the Bolivarian Republic said in a statement, emphasizing that Venezuela will not accept “orders, threats or interference” from any foreign state.
The statement calls on the international community to resolutely reject this "immoral act of aggression." It also states that Venezuela's response will be legitimate and respectful.
