Colombo, November 29 (Xinhua) — Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake declared a state of emergency on Friday in response to one of the worst weather disasters in recent years. The corresponding document was released on Saturday.
The president granted the government authority to impose emergency regulations nationwide. Officials stated that this move is aimed at protecting public safety, maintaining national stability, and accelerating the response to natural disasters—torrential rains, floods, landslides, and strong winds—threatening large parts of the island nation.
Furthermore, the Sri Lanka Police Press Office announced the creation of a Special Operations Unit under the direct supervision of the Inspector General of Police. The unit has established dedicated hotlines for assistance by phone or WhatsApp.
Police have formed rapid response teams across the country. Boats, diving equipment, and other rescue gear are ready for immediate use if needed. The Disaster Management Center, the armed forces, and other agencies are also integrated into the joint emergency response structure.
The Department of Immigration and Emigration has announced visa simplification for foreign nationals stranded in Sri Lanka due to flight cancellations and other weather-related issues. Those unable to depart the country on or after November 28 will be waived visa extension fees and overstay fines. Tourist, business, and resident visa holders have been granted a seven-day grace period to complete their extensions.
