WASHINGTON, November 28 (Xinhua) — Sarah Beckstrom, 20, one of two U.S. National Guard soldiers who were shot near the White House on Wednesday, has died. U.S. President Donald Trump announced this in a video address to the military on Thanksgiving Day on Thursday.
The deceased was from West Virginia and began serving in June 2023. According to the president, 24-year-old National Guardsman Andrew Wolf remains in critical condition.
According to the Joint Task Force, which oversees National Guard operations in Washington, the attack occurred Wednesday around 2:15 p.m. local time (19:15 GMT) near the Farragut Square subway station.
The suspect, Rahmanullah Laqanwal, is a 29-year-old Afghan citizen who collaborated with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in his home country and entered the United States in 2021, according to local media. He also suffered a gunshot wound and is in custody.
The alleged shooter traveled across the country to the US capital from his home in Bellingham, Washington, according to the US attorney for the District of Columbia.
A US official told CNN that R. Lakanwal was found "clean on all counts" both before he began working for the CIA and before immigrating to the US.
D. Trump on Wednesday called the attack "terrorism" and promised to vet every foreigner who entered Afghanistan under former President Joseph Biden and to expel anyone who "doesn't belong" in the United States or who isn't beneficial to the country.
