London, November 27 (Xinhua) — China has a key role to play in strengthening global maritime cooperation and promoting the sustainable development of the shipping industry. International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez stated this in an exclusive interview with Xinhua on Tuesday, on the sidelines of the opening ceremony of the Permanent Mission of the People's Republic of China to the IMO, which took place at the Chinese Embassy in the United Kingdom.

“China is a country that is actively involved in the shipping sector,” he said.

As one of the world's leading shipbuilding countries, home to several major ports and several large shipping companies, and a major supplier of seafarers, China contributes to the entire value chain of the maritime sector, he added.

These strengths, according to A. Dominguez, allow China to help the global maritime community attract a new generation of talented professionals and further enhance the industry's standing not only in terms of safety and security, but also in terms of sustainability.

“Therefore, China has a big role to play in cooperation with us,” he said.

He added that the establishment of China's Permanent Mission to the IMO demonstrates the country's strong commitment to supporting the organization's work in areas such as digitalization, decarbonization, improving safety, promoting diversity and inclusion, and enhancing seafarer training.

“This will only strengthen China’s participation in the exchange of experience with the IMO,” said A. Dominguez.

IMO is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for the protection of shipping and the prevention of pollution of the marine environment and the atmosphere by ships.

The organization currently has 176 members. China has been one of the 10 Category A members of the IMO Council since 1989. –0–
