Washington, November 27 (Xinhua) — The suspect in the shooting of two U.S. National Guard soldiers near the White House has been identified as an Afghan citizen who entered the United States in 2021, U.S. media reported, citing law enforcement officials.

The shooter, identified as 29-year-old Rahmanullah Laqanwal, lives in Washington state, senior law enforcement sources told NBC News. Officials said they are still working to verify his background.

The FBI will begin investigating the shooting as a possible act of terrorism, senior US law enforcement officials said.

According to authorities, the incident occurred several blocks from the White House at approximately 2:15 PM local time. While National Guard troops were patrolling, an unidentified man approached from around the corner, raised a weapon, and opened fire.

Two National Guard soldiers were injured and remain "in critical condition," Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Cash Patel told reporters. The attacker also suffered gunshot wounds and was hospitalized, police said.

US President Donald Trump wrote on social media that both National Guardsmen were seriously wounded and were being treated in two different hospitals. He also said the shooter was seriously injured.

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said at a briefing that the shooting was "targeted."

Following the attack, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Wednesday that Donald Trump had asked him to send 500 more National Guard troops to Washington. –0–
