BISSAU, November 27 (Xinhua) — Guinea-Bissau's senior armed forces officer, Horta N'Tam, was sworn in Thursday as the country's president for a one-year transitional period. This comes a day after the armed forces announced they had assumed full state authority.

Speaking at an inauguration ceremony broadcast live on national radio, O. N'Tam said the military had come to power to "prevent the collapse of the state" and pledged to "fight corruption and drug trafficking" – long-standing problems that have seriously affected the country's stability.

He called on "all citizens and political parties of Guinea-Bissau to cooperate" to ensure a successful transition.

O. N'Tam previously served as Chief of Staff of the Guinea-Bissau Army and was appointed Special Chief of Staff to the President in 2023.

Guinea-Bissau's armed forces announced on national television on Wednesday that they had assumed full state power amid "attempts by some political figures to destabilize the situation in the country." –0–
