Panama, November 26 (Xinhua) — The Dominican Republic will allow the United States to use restricted areas at San Isidro Air Base and Las Américas International Airport to combat drug trafficking. This was announced on Wednesday by President Luis Abinader after a meeting with visiting US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
"We have agreed with the United States to temporarily expand cooperation to strengthen air and maritime surveillance in the fight against drug trafficking. These actions are supported by our laws and existing agreements," the head of state emphasized.
P. Hegseth stated that this agreement is a model for the region of fruitful cooperation and joint efforts between the two countries in the fight against drug trafficking and narcoterrorism.
The Pentagon chief's visit took place against the backdrop of an intensified US military presence in the Caribbean as part of the so-called counter-narcotics strategy. –0–
