NEW DELHI, November 24 (Xinhua) — At least six people were killed and more than 50 injured on Monday in a head-on collision between two private buses in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, local police said.

The accident occurred in a village in Tenkasi district, about 550 km southwest of Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu state.

Following the accident, local authorities carried out a large-scale rescue operation and transported the victims to nearby hospitals.

Police fear the death toll could rise due to the critical condition of some of the injured.
