Beijing, November 24 (Xinhua) — China calls on Japan to clarify its so-called consistent position on the Taiwan issue, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said Monday. She emphasized that if Japan merely vaguely reiterates its unchanging position while constantly crossing red lines in its actions, such repetition is nothing more than empty words that erode and undermine the one-China principle.
Mao Ning made the announcement at a daily press briefing. Earlier at the G20 summit, Japan dismissed China's claim that Japan had changed its position on the Taiwan issue as baseless, asserting that Japan had repeatedly explained to China the meaning of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's remarks, as well as its consistent position.
China has repeatedly stated its position on Sanae Takaichi's erroneous remarks about Taiwan, Mao Ning noted, adding that the Japanese prime minister's words seriously contradict the spirit of the four Sino-Japanese political documents and fundamentally undermine the political foundation of Sino-Japanese relations.
According to a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, the Chinese side has noted Japan's recent statements regarding its "unchanged position" on the Taiwan issue. "However, what exactly is Japan's so-called unchangeable position? Can Japan fully and publicly articulate this 'unchanged position'? If Japan merely repeats that its position has not changed, without clarifying the specific content of this position and, at the same time, continually crosses red lines in its actions, then such statements will remain empty words that blur and emasculate the one-China principle," the Chinese diplomat emphasized.
Recalling that the one-China principle is an unshakable universal consensus of the international community, Mao Ning pointed out that if the Japanese government's position on the Taiwan question has truly not changed, Japan must unambiguously adhere to the one-China principle and firmly abide by the spirit of the Four Sino-Japanese Political Documents and the commitments Japan has undertaken. Specifically, this refers to the provisions of the 1972 Sino-Japanese Joint Statement that "the Japanese government recognizes the government of the People's Republic of China as the sole legitimate government of China" and "the government of the People's Republic of China reaffirms that Taiwan is an inalienable part of the territory of the People's Republic of China. The Japanese government fully understands and respects this position of the Chinese government and firmly adheres to its position in accordance with Article 8 of the Potsdam Declaration." "Why can't Japan fully and accurately reaffirm this position?" Mao Ning asked.
The Chinese side calls on the Japanese side to take China's demands seriously, truly reconsider and correct its mistakes, translate its promises to China into real actions, not persist in delusions, and ensure that words match deeds, the official representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry concluded.
