JOHANNESBURG, November 22 (Xinhua) — The Group of Twenty (G20) summit opened in Johannesburg on Saturday, adopting a declaration calling for more equitable global governance.

The G20 summit is being held on the African continent for the first time. The two-day event, themed "Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability," highlights a key moment for Africa as it seeks to enhance its role in global governance and advance development priorities shared by the Global South.

In a declaration entitled “G20 South Africa Summit: Leaders' Declaration,” G20 members reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening multilateralism with the United Nations at its core.

Participants emphasized that peace is the path to sustainable economic development and noted the importance of international cooperation and multilateral solutions in response to global challenges, including growing economic inequality and instability.

“We emphasize the importance of strengthening multilateral cooperation to address existing and emerging risks and challenges to the global economy,” the declaration says.

According to the document, G20 leaders recognized the need to increase global investment to achieve the climate goals of the Paris Agreement, as well as the need to rapidly and substantially increase investment and climate finance globally from all sources from billions to trillions of dollars.

In this regard, it is noted that it is crucial to align all relevant financial flows with these objectives, while simultaneously increasing funding, capacity and technology transfer on a voluntary and mutually agreed basis, taking into account the priorities and needs of developing countries.

“We reaffirm our commitment to the prompt, full and effective implementation of the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework adopted at the 15th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15) and call upon other countries to do the same,” the declaration states.

The document also highlights the importance of empowering women and girls to achieve gender equality.

"Marking the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, we reaffirm our commitment to their full, effective, and accelerated implementation," the declaration states. G20 leaders also welcomed the Global Women's Summit, held in Beijing in October and designed to advance the spirit of the Beijing Conference.

South Africa assumed the G20 presidency on December 1, 2024, becoming the first African country to hold the position. The United States is scheduled to assume the presidency on December 1, 2025. –0–
