Islamabad, November 21 (Xinhua) — Twelve people were killed and dozens injured on Friday morning in a boiler explosion at a chemical plant in Pakistan's eastern Punjab province, police sources told Xinhua.
The explosion occurred around 5:30 a.m. local time in the industrial city of Faisalabad, causing a massive fire that quickly spread through the building, they said.
Firefighters are working to contain the fire to prevent it from spreading to nearby homes, sources said.
The explosion caused the walls and roofs of several neighboring buildings to collapse. Police say most of the dead and injured lived in these buildings.
The injured were taken to a nearby hospital. Some are in critical condition.
A rescue operation is currently underway. There are concerns that the death toll could rise, as many people are likely trapped inside the plant building.
