BEIJING, November 21 (Xinhua) — Russian drilling engineering professor Pavel Talalay has been elected a foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), according to a list published on the CAE's official website on Friday.

According to available information, P. Talalay (born 1962) was invited to work at Jilin University, located in the province of the same name in northeastern China, in 2010. He is currently a professor at the Institute of Civil Engineering at the aforementioned university and the director of the Polar Research Center there. His research interests focus on various aspects of ice and permafrost drilling technology; ice sheet dynamics; ice properties; and environmental issues in polar regions.

In 2014, P. Talalay was awarded the Chinese government's Friendship Award, established to recognize foreign specialists who have made outstanding contributions to China's modernization process. In 2024, he was elected a full member of the Russian Academy of Mining Sciences.

In addition to P. Talalay, the list also included 23 other newly elected foreign academicians of the IAC from countries such as Great Britain, the USA, and Germany.

Additionally, 71 Chinese scientists were elected as IAC academicians, according to a list released the same day. This brings the total number of IAC academicians to 1,002, and the number of foreign academicians to 148. -0-
