JAKARTA, November 21 (Xinhua) — At least 10 people were killed and 18 others were missing after a landslide hit a residential area in Indonesia's Central Java province, local authorities said on Friday.
According to the country's National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), after several days of heavy rains, a landslide occurred in the village of Pandanarum in the district of the same name, resulting in casualties.
Seven bodies were found on Thursday, bringing the total number of confirmed deaths to 10, BNPB spokesman Abdul Mukhari said.
According to him, prolonged rains, the presence of large springs, and existing cracks in the surrounding hills weakened the soil, contributing to the scale of the disaster. Search and rescue operations are continuing in difficult conditions, A. Mukhari added.
Local authorities reported significant damage. Forty-eight homes were destroyed or collapsed, and 195 people were injured. According to the latest BNPB data released Thursday evening, a total of 934 residents were evacuated to temporary shelters.
