Washington, November 20 (Xinhua) — U.S. Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll was "very optimistic" after meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv on Thursday to discuss a new U.S. peace plan. White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt said this at a briefing, adding that U.S. President Donald Trump supports the plan.
"This is a good plan for both Russia and Ukraine. We believe it should be acceptable to both sides, and we are working hard to achieve this," the press secretary said.
She said US Special Presidential Envoy to the Middle East Steven Witkoff and Secretary of State Marco Rubio had been quietly working on the plan for the past month and "engaging equally with both sides, Russia and Ukraine, to understand what these countries are willing to do to establish long-term and sustainable peace."
Zelensky's administration said Thursday that the Ukrainian president would speak with Donald Trump in the coming days to discuss "diplomatic opportunities and key points necessary to achieve peace."
According to American media reports, the current draft peace plan contains 28 points, including major territorial concessions by Ukraine and a drastic reduction in its armed forces, as well as restrictions on access to long-range weapons. The plan may also preclude the deployment of European peacekeeping forces to Ukraine after the ceasefire.
The disclosure of the information provoked a sharp reaction in Europe. European leaders fear being excluded from the negotiating process and view certain aspects of the project as favoring Russia.
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas reportedly stressed on Thursday that any viable peace plan must be supported by Ukraine and Europe.
Russian-Ukrainian negotiations reached a deadlock after the August meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in the US state of Alaska. –0–
