Tokyo, November 20 (Xinhua) — The Yokohama District Court on Wednesday ordered the Japanese government to pay approximately 3.9 billion yen (25 million U.S. dollars) in damages to residents living near Atsugi Air Base near Tokyo due to noise-related health risks and stress, the Kyodo News Agency reported.
The plaintiffs in the case included 8,000 people living near the Atsugi Naval Air Station in Kanagawa Prefecture and others.
Presiding Judge Nobuhiro Okada stated that the loud noise "caused harm beyond what is acceptable in public life." He acknowledged that the base's operations, located in the densely populated cities of Ayase and Yamato, had long-standing negative impacts on local residents and amounted to a violation of their rights, according to the report.
A spokesman for Japan's Defense Ministry's regional bureau said the agency "will work appropriately with relevant agencies regarding our next steps."
Lawsuits over noise pollution at the Atsugi air base, which is shared between the Japanese Self-Defense Forces and the US military, have been filed since 1976. –0–
