UNITED NATIONS, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) — China's permanent representative to the United Nations Fu Cong on Wednesday asked the Syrian transitional government to prioritize the fight against terrorism.
Repeated terrorist attacks in Syria demonstrate that terrorism remains a serious challenge to the country's reconstruction, and the presence of foreign terrorist fighters there is of particular concern, Fu Cong noted.
"The Syrian transitional government has promised that Syria will not be a source of threat to any country. We hope that it will fulfill its anti-terrorism obligations by taking effective measures to resolutely combat all international terrorist organizations designated by the UN Security Council, including the East Turkestan Islamic Movement," the Chinese representative stated.
The Security Council adjusted sanctions against Syria to create favorable conditions for its economic recovery and nation-building. For entities and individuals still on the sanctions list, UN Security Council sanctions remain in effect and must be strictly enforced, Fu Cong stated.
He recalled that the Golan Heights are internationally recognized as occupied Syrian territory, and Israel must immediately withdraw its troops from there.
China pursues a policy of friendship towards all Syrian people and respects their independent choice, welcomes Syria's participation in the Belt and Road Initiative, and is willing to strengthen cooperation with Syria within the framework of multilateral mechanisms, Fu Cong said.
The Permanent Representative of the People's Republic of China to the UN noted that China is ready to actively consider the possibility of participating in the economic recovery of Syria and contributing to its social development and improving the standard of living of the population. –0–
