Beijing, November 20 (Xinhua) — Since September 15, when China introduced a visa-free regime for holders of ordinary Russian passports, passenger traffic from Russia through the Dongning port in Heilongjiang Province (northeast China) has exceeded 10,000 over the past two months, representing a 71.3 percent year-on-year increase, according to the news portal chinanews.com.cn, citing data from the Dongning city government.
As a reminder, China introduced a trial visa-free regime for Russian citizens holding regular passports from September 15, 2025, to September 14, 2026. Russian citizens holding valid passports can visit China visa-free for business, tourism, visiting relatives and friends, exchanging visits, and transit. Their visa-free stay in China cannot exceed 30 days.
The Dongning Port is located in an important area of the Northeast Asian Economic and Trade Corridor and is an important channel for expanding Heilongjiang Province's ties with the outside world.
Since the introduction of visa-free travel for Russian citizens, Dongning authorities have taken advantage of the Belt and Road Initiative's (BRI) northern corridor to boost tourism and consumption, thereby facilitating the city's development and opening up to the outside world.
In October, Dongning hosted the 3rd eSports Carnival featuring representatives from China, Russia, and the Republic of Korea, as well as the 7th China-Russia Open Youth and Teen Basketball Tournament. Over 200 Russian representatives participated in these events, which also attracted over 2,000 Russian tourists.
At the same time, the Dongning Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine has offered discounted medical examination and service packages to Russian tourists, which has also increased the city's attractiveness for tourists from Russia. -0-
