Ankara, November 19 (Xinhua) — Türkiye appointed an ambassador to Syria on Wednesday after a 13-year hiatus, taking a major step toward normalizing diplomatic relations between Ankara and Damascus.

According to a decree by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan published in the Official Government Gazette, Deputy Foreign Minister Nuh Yılmaz has been appointed ambassador.

The Turkish embassy in Damascus has remained closed since March 26, 2012. Ankara also resumed diplomatic activity at its consulate in Aleppo, which had also been closed for 13 years.

N. Yılmaz served in the Turkish National Intelligence Organization from August 2013 to June 2023. On May 20, 2024, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The diplomatic thaw has also led to renewed civil ties. Earlier this year, Turkish Airlines resumed direct flights from Istanbul to Damascus for the first time in over a decade. Since January 23, flights have been operating on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays.
