St. Petersburg, November 19 (Xinhua) — Russia ranks first in the world in terms of icebreaker fleet size, and shipping volumes along the Northern Sea Route (NSR) have already exceeded those of the USSR threefold. This was reported by RIA Novosti on Wednesday, citing Russian Transport Minister Andrei Nikitin.

At the Transport of Russia forum, the minister also noted that Russia ranks second in the world in terms of the length of its waterways.

Today, the Russian icebreaker fleet consists of 34 diesel and 8 nuclear icebreakers.

According to Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Savelyev, the number of Russian nuclear icebreakers on the Northern Sea Route is planned to increase to 11 vessels by 2030 to ensure cargo volumes of 70 million to 109 million tons.
