TOKYO, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) — The governor of Hiroshima Prefecture and the mayor of Nagasaki City opposed Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's attempt to revise the three non-nuclear principles, a day after the governors of Okinawa and Nagasaki expressed similar concerns.
Hiroshima Governor Hidehiko Yuzaki said at a press conference on Tuesday that Hiroshima is the first city in human history to be hit by an atomic bomb and that three long-standing non-nuclear principles must be observed.
H. Yuzaki stated that relying on nuclear weapons for security is dangerous, and the government should strive to find a way out of the nuclear deterrent situation.
Nagasaki Mayor Shiro Suzuki also told the press on Tuesday that Takaichi's attempt to revise the three non-nuclear principles would increase Japan's reliance on nuclear deterrence. These principles have long been considered national policy, and the government must be urged to adhere to them.
The Three Non-Nuclear Principles include the renunciation of nuclear weapons, the renunciation of nuclear weapons production, and a ban on the import of nuclear weapons into Japan. They were formulated in 1967 by then-Prime Minister Eisaku Sato and later approved by a Diet resolution.
The National Security Strategy, one of three documents approved by the cabinet in 2022, states: “The core policy of adherence to the three non-nuclear principles will remain unchanged in the future.”
However, Japanese media recently reported, citing government sources, that during the review of Japan's National Security Strategy and other security-related documents, S. Takaichi is studying the possibility of changing the third non-nuclear principle, which prohibits the import of nuclear weapons into Japan, which is raising serious doubts and concerns within the country. -0-
