HAIKOU, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) — Authorities in the south Chinese island province of Hainan ordered the suspension of ferry services across the Qiongzhou Strait from 2 a.m. Tuesday due to strong winds and cold waves, local authorities said Monday evening.

The Hainan Provincial Meteorological Service issued a blue alert for strong winds on Monday, warning that cold waves would bring gusts of up to 24.4 meters per second from Tuesday to Wednesday, posing a hazard to maritime transport.

Local ports have now implemented an emergency response to expedite the departure of vehicles and passengers from the island. Local railway authorities have suspended all passenger train services to and from the island scheduled for Tuesday, as well as some services to and from the island scheduled for Wednesday.

According to the Haikou Maritime Affairs Bureau (the capital of Hainan Province), it has implemented a 24-hour emergency response system and strengthened the monitoring of key vessels, such as ro-ro ships and vessels carrying hazardous cargo.

China has a four-tier weather warning system, with red representing the highest level of danger, followed by orange, yellow, and blue. -0-
