Quito, November 17 (Xinhua) — Ecuadorians voted against allowing foreign military bases in the country in a constitutional referendum held Sunday.

The proposal, put forward by President Daniel Noboa, was aimed at finding additional measures for the government to combat the escalation of violence attributed to organized crime groups linked to drug trafficking.

According to the National Electoral Council, after counting more than 95 percent of the ballots, the overwhelming majority of voters voted “against” lifting the constitutional ban on the establishment of foreign military bases in Ecuador. –0–
