BEIJING, November 17 (Xinhua) — More than 100 scholars, experts, and youth representatives from China, Russia, Kazakhstan, and other Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) countries recently gathered at Northwestern Polytechnical University in Xi'an, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, to discuss the important role of youth in promoting regional sustainable development.

As reported on the Zhongguo Xinwenshe news agency website, speaking at the opening ceremony of the international conference "Shanghai Spirit and the Power of Youth Action," Sun Zhuangzhi, Director of the Institute of Russia, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, noted that this year marks the "SCO Year of Sustainable Development." As a mechanism for a new type of regional cooperation, the SCO strives to create an open, inclusive, and multi-layered regional order, becoming an important force representing the "Global South" amid the wave of anti-globalization.

Sun Zhuangzhi said youth are the key to the SCO's future, calling on young people to strengthen exchanges and cooperation and actively respond to the challenges of the digital age in order to jointly promote regional peace, development, and prosperity.

Discussion topics at the event covered a wide range of topics, including the dissemination of Silk Road culture, environmental management practices, innovations in youth policy, and avenues for scientific and technological cooperation, demonstrating the diverse areas of SCO youth participation in regional governance. This not only deepened the consensus of young scientists from SCO countries on sustainable development but also expanded practical ways for youth to participate in global governance, giving new impetus to building an open, inclusive, and sustainable SCO home.

The conference was jointly organized by the Institute of Russian, Eastern European and Central Asian Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Northwestern Polytechnical University. -0-
