Astana, November 17 (Xinhua) — A nationwide competition to choose a name for Kazakhstan's first nuclear power plant has concluded. "Balkhash" has won, Kazinform reported on Monday, citing the press service of the Kazakhstan Atomic Energy Agency.

The competition ran from September 25 to October 10. According to the agency, 10,460 unique ideas were submitted. A special commission reviewed the 100 most popular proposals. The name "Balkhash" was submitted by 882 participants and won first place.

The agency noted that the choice of name is in line with international practice, whereby nuclear power plants are named based on their geographic location.

Deputy Chairman of the agency, Asset Makhambetov, announced that all citizens who voted for the chosen name will be considered its co-authors. They will receive corresponding electronic certificates within a month.

In addition, the agency has created a unified database of all proposed options, which will be used when selecting names for future nuclear facilities. –0–
