TOKYO, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) — Anti-military base and war groups from across Japan's Okinawa Prefecture held a seminar in Tokyo to express concerns and doubts about the government's military expansion in Okinawa and the southwestern islands.
More than 230 people attended the event on Friday, including members of the Japanese Diet and the Okinawa Prefectural Assembly, as well as citizen representatives from various parts of Okinawa, who expressed their strong dissatisfaction and deep concerns about the security situation in Okinawa and throughout the Ryukyu Islands to the Japanese government.
Mizuho Fukushima, leader of the Social Democratic Party of Japan, stated that Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's description of the "Taiwan emergency" as a "survival-threatening situation" is completely illogical. Currently, not only Okinawa, but also Kyushu, western Japan, and, indeed, all of Japan, are facing a trend toward becoming military strongholds. Japanese society must, under any circumstances, prevent war and end this dangerous policy.
Former Okinawa mayor of Ginowan City and House of Councillors member Yoichi Iha criticized the Japanese government for provoking a "critical situation," increasing reliance on US military bases, and accelerating military expansion.
Yukako Sonan, a representative of a citizens' group from Miyako Island in Okinawa, told Xinhua that civilian facilities and military installations of the Japan Self-Defense Forces on small islands are often located in close proximity, making it difficult to clearly distinguish between them. In the event of a conflict, civilians would inevitably suffer.
The seminar participants noted that the southwestern islands and other areas risk becoming the front lines of war and that it is crucial to prevent further deterioration of the security situation in the region.
