New Delhi, November 15 (Xinhua) — At least seven people were killed and about 30 injured on Friday in a powerful explosion at a police station in Indian-controlled Kashmir, the India Today news channel reported on Saturday.
The incident took place in Srinagar, the summer capital of the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir.
"At least seven people were killed and around 30 injured in a powerful explosion that rocked the Nowgam police station in Srinagar late Friday night. Officials warn that the death toll could rise," the TV channel reported.
Following the explosion, a fire broke out in the building, and several cars parked on the grounds also caught fire. Video footage from the scene shows a shockwave sweeping through the police station, with flames and thick smoke billowing into the air. Eyewitnesses also reported the same.
According to the channel, the blast occurred while police and forensic experts were handling explosives brought from Faridabad, Haryana, and stored at the station as part of the investigation into the recent car bomb blast in New Delhi.
The media also reported that most of the dead were police officers and forensic experts who were examining the explosives.
Police have not yet made any statements regarding the explosion. –0–
