BEIJING, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) — Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian on Friday criticized the United States for selling arms to the Chinese region of Taiwan, saying China expresses serious dissatisfaction and resolute opposition to the move and will take all necessary measures to resolutely safeguard national sovereignty, security and territorial integrity.

The Pentagon announced Thursday that the U.S. side had approved the first arms sale to Taiwan during Donald Trump's second presidency, according to media reports.

Asked to comment on the reports, Lin Jian said at a regular departmental press conference that the US arms sales to Taiwan seriously violate the one-China principle and the provisions of the three Sino-US joint communiqués, especially the communiqué of August 17, 1982, undermine China's sovereignty and security interests, violate international law, and send a seriously wrong signal to separatist forces advocating "Taiwan independence."

"The Taiwan question lies at the core of China's core interests and is the first red line that must not be crossed in Sino-US relations," Lin Jian noted.

China urges the US to adhere to the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiqués, implement the commitments made by US leaders on Taiwan-related issues, stop condoning and assisting separatist forces in their attempt to achieve "Taiwan independence" through military buildup, and safeguard China-US relations and peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait with concrete actions, the Chinese diplomat added. -0-
