Beijing, November 12 (Xinhua) — China will work with all parties to uphold the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities and strive for positive and balanced outcomes at the 30th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30), making new contributions to global climate governance, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Wednesday.
The COP30 conference is taking place in Belém, Brazil. COP30 President André Corrêa do Lago reportedly stated that China is developing solutions that benefit everyone, noting that countries in the Global North have lost their enthusiasm for addressing the climate crisis, while countries in the Global South continue to move forward. Some commentators point out that China has exceeded or is on track to exceed most of the pledges it made ten years ago, thereby saving the Paris Agreement, and that developing countries have already replaced developed countries as the primary force in the fight against climate change.
Commenting on these statements, Guo Jiakun noted at a regular press briefing that ten years after the signing of the Paris Agreement, global climate governance is entering a key phase. He stated that China is actively involved in global climate governance and strongly supports Brazil, the current COP30 presidency, in hosting the current conference.
As the Chinese diplomat recalled, Ding Xuexiang, Special Representative of the President of the People's Republic of China Xi Jinping, member of the Standing Committee of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, and Vice Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, attended the Climate Summit in Belém and delivered a speech.
According to the official, Ding Xuexiang conveyed the spirit of the decisions of the Fourth Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee and sent a strong signal of commitment to the right direction, turning climate commitments into real actions, deepening openness and cooperation, which gave impetus to the successful holding of COP30.
"Climate change affects the shared future of humanity. Whether it's the Global South or the Global North, whether it's developing or developed countries, we're all in the same boat, and united cooperation and collective action are the only right choice," stated Guo Jiakun.
He emphasized that China is effectively combating climate change. As one of the countries with the fastest reduction in energy consumption intensity, China has made achieving peak carbon emissions and carbon neutrality a national strategy, built the world's most structured and comprehensive system of carbon reduction measures, and completed the creation of the world's largest and fastest-growing renewable energy system.
"70 percent of wind power equipment and 80 percent of photovoltaic components worldwide come from China. They help reduce the cost of global wind and photovoltaic generation by more than 60 percent and 80 percent, respectively," the official representative noted.
Guo Jiakun added that at the UN high-level special event on climate, President Xi Jinping solemnly announced China's Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to 2035, covering all economic sectors and all greenhouse gases and setting an absolute emission reduction target for the first time, demonstrating China's strong determination and utmost efforts. –0–
