Guangzhou, November 9 (Xinhua) — Chinese President Xi Jinping met Sunday with International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Kirsty Coventry and its Honorary President for Life Thomas Bach. The meeting took place in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province in southern China.
K. Coventry and T. Bach arrived in China to participate in the opening ceremony of the 15th All-China Spartakiad.
Xi Jinping noted that the Olympic spirit is an important element of human civilization, embodies people's aspirations for a better world, and is highly consistent with the Chinese concept of building a community with a shared future for mankind.
"China has consistently and firmly put the Olympic spirit into practice, upholding and promoting it," Xi Jinping said, adding that in recent years, China and the IOC have supported each other in developing sports and, through joint efforts, have achieved many great and worthy achievements.
"Earlier this year, we gathered in snowy and icy Harbin for the Asian Winter Games. Today, we meet again in the spring-like warmth of Guangzhou for the All-China Spartakiad. This speaks to the strong and close partnership between China and the IOC," the Chinese President noted.
According to him, the Chinese side intends to deepen high-level cooperation with the IOC, promote the development of the Olympic movement, simultaneously transform China into a strong sports power, bring more wisdom and strength to global sports governance, and make further contributions to building a community with a shared future for mankind.
Xi Jinping said that the All-China Spartakiad is the largest multi-sport event of the highest level in China, which this year is jointly hosted by Guangdong Province and the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macao.
Noting that the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area is one of China's regions with the greatest degree of external opening-up and economic activity, the Chinese President pointed out that the goal of developing this region is to turn it into a strategic pillar of China's new development architecture, a demonstration zone for high-quality development, and a pioneer of Chinese-style modernization.
Xi Jinping expressed confidence that the current All-China Spartakiad will showcase not only the country's new sporting achievements in the new era, but also the diverse achievements of Chinese-style modernization in the Greater Bay Area.
K. Coventry and T. Bach, for their part, expressed admiration for the opportunity to be in Guangzhou and witness the vibrant dynamics and colossal successes of Chinese modernization in the Greater Bay Area.
Commending China's active commitment to the Olympic spirit and its significant contributions to the Olympic movement, they stated that the IOC is grateful to China for its long-standing and strong support and hopes to continuously strengthen cooperation with China to jointly promote the development of the Olympic movement and further spread the Olympic spirit throughout the world, so as to strengthen unity among people and promote world peace.
