SHANGHAI, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) — Pudong New Area in east China's Shanghai is consolidating its position as a leading innovation hub, as evidenced by the area's significant achievements in three major industries: integrated circuits, biomedicine and artificial intelligence (AI).

The progress was highlighted at the Pudong Sub-Forum of the 8th Hongqiao International Economic Forum, which was held in Shanghai on Thursday.

The integrated circuit (IC) sector has demonstrated remarkable resilience and growth. According to data, IC component exports in the region reached $20.6 billion in value in the first three quarters of 2025, an increase of 7.4 percent year-on-year, providing stability to the global IC supply chain.

Wu Jincheng, Deputy Secretary General of the Shanghai Municipal Government and Governor of the Pudong New Area, noted that the Pudong New Area has essentially created a self-sufficient integrated circuit (IC) industrial chain, encompassing design, manufacturing, packaging, testing, equipment, materials, and EDA software. The integrated circuit sector in the area is worth $41 billion in total value.

Moreover, the Pudong New Area has become a hub for over 4,000 biomedical companies. Innovation in this sector is accelerating: business development deals related to innovative drugs have reached a significant value of $20.4 billion.

The AI sector in the Pudong New Area is also developing dynamically. The mobility community within the Zhangjiang Science City, which has been in operation for just 14 months, has already attracted over 150 specialized large-scale enterprises. Beyond AI, the area is actively developing future industries—high-end autonomous driving testing tracks spanning over 1,000 km have been opened there, as well as the world's first outdoor 6G testing environment.
