NEW YORK, November 5 (Xinhua) — At least three people were killed and 11 injured on Tuesday when a cargo plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Muhammad Ali International Airport in Louisville, Kentucky, in the southeastern U.S. state, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said.
"We believe at least three people have died. I believe that number will rise," Beshear said at a press conference.
A UPS cargo plane bound for Honolulu crashed near the airport, which is UPS's global hub, around 5:15 p.m. (22:15 GMT) on Tuesday, the Federal Aviation Administration said.
When the plane exploded, some rescuers "were forced to take cover behind various objects," Beshear said. "The situation remains very dangerous due to the presence of various flammable or potentially explosive substances," he added.
Police first issued a stay-in-place order for everyone within a 5-mile radius of the airport, then expanded the order to all areas north of the airport to the Ohio River.
The plane, a McDonnell Douglas MD-11F built in 1991, can take off at a maximum weight of 633,000 pounds and carry more than 38,000 gallons of fuel, according to Boeing, which bought McDonnell Douglas. –0–
