Ashgabat, November 5 (Xinhua) — The first meeting of a new project aimed at developing financial mechanisms for environmental conservation was held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan's capital. The country's International Information Center reported on Wednesday.

The project is being implemented within the framework of the global Biodiversity Finance Initiative /BIOFIN/, supported by the United Nations Development Programme /UNDP/ and the Global Environment Facility.

The program is designed to assist countries in developing national investment plans for wildlife conservation and fulfills the goals of the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, adopted at the 15th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity. According to the document, at least 30 percent of the planet's land and marine areas should be protected by 2030.

As Rustem Nuryev, Head of the Department for the Protection of Flora and Fauna of the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan, noted, sustainable biodiversity is the foundation of the country's food and water security.

In Turkmenistan, up to 90 percent of the costs of implementing environmental and nature conservation programs are covered by the state budget. –0–
