New Delhi, November 4 (Xinhua) — Eight people were killed and about 17 others were seriously injured in a train accident that occurred on Tuesday in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh, a senior official told media.

At least two people remain trapped inside the damaged train. The accident occurred in Bilaspur district when a passenger train crashed into a stopped freight train.

The injured were taken to different hospitals.

"This is a major accident. We are conducting rescue operations," district administrator Sanjay Agrawal told the media.
