BEIJING, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) — The People's Bank of China (PBOC, central bank) on Monday announced it will issue a commemorative coin dedicated to the Peking Opera musical drama (jingju) on November 25.
The obverse of the brass alloy coin will feature the national emblem of the People's Republic of China and traditional Chinese opera instruments. Below the national emblem will be the year 2025. The coin will have a face value of five yuan (about 71 US cents). A mintage of 60 million pieces will be issued.
The reverse side of the coin will feature an engraved image of a "jing" (painted face) – a male role in Peking opera, executed with colorful patterns and decorative graphics – as well as the characters "zhongguo jingju yishu," meaning "the art of Chinese jingju opera," the Central Bank said in a statement.
Authorized banks will accept applications to purchase coins from November 18 to 19, and then will carry out exchanges from November 25 to December 1. -0-
