Baghdad, November 3 (Xinhua) — The UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Iraq, Mohammed Al-Hassan, stressed the organization's commitment to supporting the parliamentary elections in Iraq scheduled for November 11, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

During a meeting with Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, M. Al-Hassan confirmed that the UN “will continue to support Iraq in the electoral process and help strengthen political and economic stability.”

Speaking about the final stages of preparations for the national vote, F. Hussein noted “the Iraqi government’s commitment to ensuring transparent and fair elections that reflect the will of the Iraqi people” and expressed gratitude for the ongoing technical support from the UN.

As noted in the statement, the parties also discussed regional and international developments, as well as ways to strengthen cooperation between Iraq and the UN to promote stability and sustainable development.

More than 21 million eligible Iraqis will take part in the election of 329 members of parliament for a four-year term.

The last parliamentary elections, held in 2021, led to violent clashes in Baghdad and nearly a year of political deadlock before a government was formed. –0–
