Tripoli, November 2 (Xinhua) — A total of 45 illegal migrants were rescued off the coast of the eastern Libyan city of Tobruk, the Libyan newspaper Al-Watan reported on Saturday.
The migrants—23 Egyptian and 22 Sudanese nationals—were reportedly traveling in a rubber dinghy. They were discovered by the Libyan Coast Guard approximately 222.2 kilometers north of Tobruk.
They received the necessary medical and humanitarian assistance and were then sent to a detention centre to complete legal procedures.
Since the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya has remained a major transit point for migrants attempting to reach Europe. Migrant smuggling networks thrive amid political division and insecurity, leaving migrants in constant danger of shipwrecks in the Mediterranean.
