Kabul, November 2 (Xinhua) — Afghan security forces arrested 144 people for attempting to cross the border and illegally enter neighboring Iran, the military said in a statement Sunday.

According to the statement, two suspected human traffickers were also among those detained by troops stationed in Herat province in western Afghanistan.

The security forces' goal is to strengthen border security and prevent illegal border crossings, and they will continue such operations, the statement said.

A couple of weeks ago, Afghan security forces also arrested 202 people on the border with Iran for attempting to enter the neighboring country.

While hundreds of Afghan refugees return home from Iran every day, numerous Afghans leave for Iran illegally every day to escape poverty and unemployment.

The Afghan government has pledged to curb human trafficking and illegal entry into neighboring states.
