COLOMBO, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) — A fuel train derailed in Sri Lanka on Sunday morning, paralyzing train services on the country's main railway line, the Railway Authority said.

The incident occurred between the Mirigama and Wilwatte railway stations in Western Province. According to the department, the train was transporting fuel from the Kolonnawa fuel depot in Batticaloa.

Railway workers are currently clearing tracks to restore regular train service.

Sri Lanka is a frequent destination for train accidents. According to the Sri Lanka Railway Authority, 1,239 incidents involving trains were recorded in 2023, including 125 derailments.
