JERUSALEM, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday vowed to disarm the Palestinian Hamas movement and demilitarize the Gaza Strip, saying his government would continue to pursue remaining militant cells despite a ceasefire that took effect last month.
"Some Hamas cells continue to operate in parts of Gaza that we control, and we are systematically eliminating them," Netanyahu told ministers, referring to areas in the cities of Rafah and Khan Younis in the southern Palestinian enclave.
"The disarmament of Hamas and the demilitarization of the Gaza Strip are our guiding principles," the Israeli prime minister stated, adding that this is a goal he has agreed upon with US President Donald Trump. "If this cannot be achieved one way, it will be done another way," Netanyahu declared.
He said the Israeli military would continue to protect troops still in Gaza. He clarified that Israel would notify its American allies of the operations, "but would not seek their permission." The prime minister emphasized that Israel would not compromise its "supreme responsibility for security."
Netanyahu's statements come as the White House is working to maintain the ceasefire and secure the release of all remaining hostages, even as Israeli strikes continue, albeit at a reduced intensity.
