Addis Ababa, November 2 (Xinhua) — African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson Mahamoud Ali Yusuf has congratulated Samia Suluhu Hassan on her election as President of Tanzania.
On Saturday, Tanzania's Independent National Electoral Commission announced that incumbent President S.S. Hassan of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (RCM) party won the presidential election with 97.66 percent of the vote.
In a statement released on Saturday, the AU Commission Chair congratulated S.S. Hassan on her victory in Wednesday's general elections, which were marred by days of violent protests.
M.A. Yusuf expressed deep regret over the loss of life during the post-election protests and expressed condolences to the families of the victims.
The AU Commission Chairperson “emphasises the need to respect fundamental rights and freedoms, including the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and expression, and calls on the authorities to protect these rights within the law,” the statement said.
Calling on Tanzanians to exercise their rights peacefully and responsibly, M.A. Yusuf reaffirmed the principles of the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, as well as respect for the rule of law, human rights, fundamental freedoms and political pluralism as the cornerstones of a democratic and stable society.
He also reiterated the AU's commitment to supporting the people and government of Tanzania in their efforts to maintain peace, national unity and democracy.
S.S. Hassan becomes the country's first elected female president. She served as vice president from 2015 to 2021 and assumed the presidency for the first time in March 2021 following the death of then-President John Magufuli, becoming the first female head of state in Tanzania's history.
